Bef. Statehood divorces granted in general court
1825 divorces granted in superior and circuit courts
1835 law prohibiting marriage between whites and blacks passed
Bef. 1853 divorces granted by the General Assembly by legislative act
Bef. Civil War Slaves prohibited from marrying
1865 law prohibiting bigamous marriages passed
Aft. Civil War former slaves permitted to marry and legitimize their children
1875 courts of common pleas (jurisdiction of which is the same as the circuit court) abolished (except in cities with populations exceeding 3500)
Bef. 1881 law requiring marriage licenses passed
1881 law requiring marriage licenses passed
1921 law prohibiting common law marriages passed
