Tombs Family Cemetery
Bowling Green, MO

This family cemetery is located on Rd 466, in the SW 1/4 of Sec. 32-T.53N.R.3W. in Pike Co., MO, southwest of Bowling Green. It was originally on land belonging to the early Tombs settlers in that area. The earliest settler being David Tombs, who came in 1818, then later passed on to his son David L. Tombs. Finally Samuel Alexander Tombs, who died in 1904 and was a son of David L. Tombs, owned it.

The cemetery was a small plot on a hill, not far from the road in a little grove of trees. In 1965, when it was visited by Frank P. Tombs, a grandson of Samuel A. Tombs, and Frank's wife Florence, of Cloves, California, and Marie Tombs Baker, a granddaughter of Samuel, and her husband Dennis Baker, of Pismo, California, the following tombstones were recorded:

DAVID TOMBS, Born May 15, 1763, Died Sep. 13, 1839
           76 yrs. 3 mo. 29 ds.

SINA TOMBS, (wife of David), Born May 3, 1769, Died May 26, 1831

DAVID L. TOMBS, Born Aug. 17, 1900, Died Mar. 24, 1862

LOUISIANA TOMBS, (wife of David L.), Born Dec. 20, 1804,
             Died Jun. 2, 1863

LAVINA F. TOMBS, (daughter of David L. & Louisiana Tombs),
             Born Mar. 20, 1831, Died Aug. 31, 1846
             15 yrs. 5 mos. 11 ds.

Two small stones with the letters D.T. and S.T. were also found in the
cemetery. These may have been stillborn children with the letters standing for
"daughter Tombs" and "son Tombs". There are no records of other family
members who might have been buried there.

In Oct. 2004, Shirley Tombs Jennings, of Sanger, CA, a daughter of Frank P. Tombs, and her son Bruce Jennings of Oregon visited this site. At this time the cemetery only had fragments of stones left.
