OBITUARY - Henry Martin Baxter was born in Buffalo township, Pike County, Missouri, March 11, 1844; died at his home in Arensdale, near Manitou, Colorado, May 18, 1907. He was the son of James William and Lavina Price Baxter; was married to Ellen A. Boyd, March 11, 1875; of this union two children were born, E. H. Branstetter, who died at Manitou in November, 1901, and Mittie H. Parks of Pueblo, who was at her father's bedside when he died. Mrs. Baxter died in June, 1905.

Mr. Baxter had been a consistent member of the M. E. Church, South, for many years and lived a pure and upright life, full of deeds of kindness and self sacrifice for his loved ones. His tender care for invalid wife will always be a sweet memory to the daughter who now mourns for him.

He formerly lived at New Harmony, Missouri, but moved to Colorado in 1899, where he lived until his death. Since coming to Colorado he was employed by the Manitou Mineral Springs Company, and was well known around Manitou, where he had many friends, as shown by the many beautiful floral offerings sent at the time of his death.

He had been ill only a few months, having first shown symptoms of dropsy in February. He also had had cancer of the stomach which caused his sudden death. His daughter was with him from the first and every effort was made to stay the disease and prolong his life, but on a bright May mornig (sic) his spirit passed quietly peacefully to the Great Beyond. On the Monday following, we laid him to rest by the side of his wife in Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs. Funeral services were held from the home, conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. B. Cross, assisted by Rev. E. Evans Carrington.

Mr. Baxter was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the Missouri Volunteer Infantry.

Besides the daughter, he leaves two grandchildren in Missouri, Basil and Paul Branstetter; also four sisters in Missouri and a brother in California.

He born his affliction bravely and without complaint.

A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is stilled; A place is vacant in our home, Which never can be filled. God in His wisdom has recalled, The boon His love had given, And though the body slumbers here, The soul is safe in Heaven, G. W. P.
